music & gifts to last a lifetime

How to make a song wicked?
Easy. Mix it with an already wicked track.

heehee... i love mix and match just a little bit more now :)

************************************************************************8

I was prepared to tell you all a different story, but the music has totally made me lose track of it. See how canine like my brain is? Once upon a time SQUIREL. Yarr.

So instead I will tell you about one of the craziest but best gifts I had ever received.

Mark and I were just married, and opening up presents at the reception hall when we opened up my aunts gift. At first we both looked at it with the most wtf? Faces you have ever seen. My aunt knew right away it was her gift we had opened and started to laugh to the point of tears! In the box (which was so heavy neither of us could lift it!) was somewhere in the neighbourhood of 100 cans of canned goods. All, stripped of the labels.

Seriously.

I thought this was the oddest gift I had ever received; I mean what the heck do you say when you receive a hundred cans of who knows what?? “uh.. thanks.... thanks a lot?” doesn’t come across so genuine. My aunt explained that I would understand how valuable these cans were later, and reassured me that it was all good stuff like soup and veggies and fruit etc. There wouldn’t be any dog food or anything, just regular pantry items.

We accepted the gift as a crazy aunt gift and went on with our lives.

For the next year, not only were we really broke, but the eternal question heard from mouths around the world loomed over us nightly “what do you want for dinner?”. When we would argue over what each of us wanted, we would simply settle it with MYSTERY CAN! We’d choose our meat or entree and open up a mystery can, and that’s what we would have! Sometimes the flavours were really unexpectedly great (like canned pears and Greek chicken, yum!) and sometimes they were not so good for combination (pancakes with green beans, not so delish). But we ate whatever we got from the cans, and it usually was a good side rather than a bad one.
Even when we had people over for dinner we would crack open a mystery can! We would tell the story (it is pretty short after all) and the guests were usually so excited that they insisted on opening a mystery can, because how exciting was that!? Not knowing what you were going to have for dinner, and maybe getting this really odd combination that you could talk about forever!

Now, I understand and love the gift more than any other gift we received (even the money we got which helped finance our first car!). She gave us a marriage saver.
Do you know how many fights people have over what to have for dinner??? Well if you are in, or have been in a relationship you know that number is high! We didn’t fight, ever, for a whole year at least, about dinner. Our dinner conversation was always light and bubbly because of the mystery can suspense, reveal, and deliver. Because of the mystery can, we didn’t fight over what to have when undecided. Dinner became this great time of day where we got to sit down, be very relaxed and in good humour and enjoy each others company.

Yes, those mystery cans were a very odd gift to open, but still remain in my head as the best gift for newlyweds.

"Once upon a time SQUIREL. Yarr." This caused the first big laugh of the day! Thanks.

That is so cool! I'm doing that for my kids when they get married. Hopefully that will be eons from now and I'll still remember. LoL.

Food is a good gift, but I'd have rather had the labels on. Makes planning tough when you don't know what's in the cans, and unlike you and Mark, I hate surprises.

Ok..

#1. The Squirrel comment almost made me spray Pepsi on my monitor :)

#2. Your Aunt was a friggin' GENIUS!! That's one of the most awesomely original gift ideas I've ever heard of, for the right person.

Hermit - we got pretty good at guessing what was in the cans (they are all shaped differently and different color and ribs). I am not so much into life altering surprizes, but it would suit me just fine to have a small surprize every day :)

Paladin - I thought it was an awesome gift! Honestly, I remember sitting with another newley wed couple and them bitching about having to decide on dinner, and the fights it causes which build up on other little things to make a big blow out... I just thought to myself THANK THE GODS for mystery cans!! lol... so riddiculous, but those things probably staved off multiple silly fights.

What a great idea. LOL...I think that would work for a house warming gift to someone just out on their own.
